Destination Information:
The Mahakam River is about 1.000 km lenght as the most important traffic route in East Bornoe. Between the spring in the mountains and the delta along the coast. At least there 6 smaller rivers end up at Mahakam such as Belayan river, River Lawa, River Kedang Kepala, River Telen, River Tenggarong and River Karang Mumus. Mahakam River as the biggest river in east Borneo is also center for local people for fish farming and home of endanger fresh water dolphins.

Muara Muntai is located near the big Lakes of the Mahakam River as a stop for visitors traveling into the hinterland. Cruising the Lakes, when lucky some Fresh Water Dolphins can be seen, Fishermen living in their houses build on and along the Lake Semayang, Lake Jempang and Lake Melintang.

Tanjung Isuy is a settlement of the Benuaq dayak wellknow for its traditional longhouse. Woman can be seen weaving ulap doyo, the traditional free-fiber cloth typical of the area.Visitors can also see the guardian statues and the grave of a Benuaq king.In this area, the nearest Dayak village along the Mahakam River from Samarinda, we can see floating houses on Lake Jempang .There is a grand old longhouse in Mancong, 15 kilometers from Tanjung Isuy. Also visit the lamin ( Longhouses ) of Pentat and Lembunah, on the Ohong River. At the beautifull Ohong Creek which is a tunnul of low land forest Various species of birds, iguanas, and bekantan (Proboces monkeys) can be found in the forest along the river.

Pesut Mahakam ( Fresh Water dolphin )
This endanger fresh water dolphin locally called Pesut Mahakam (orcela fluminalis), found in the Mahakam River, Sesayap River at East Kalimantan, Mekhong river in Cambodja and in the Amazon. In the Mahakam it usually surfaces towards sunset in the vicinity of Loangkang. Get the information of this species at The RASI Information and Rehabilitation Center at Muara Pahu.

Kersik Luway National Park is nature reserve famous of it's "Black Orchid" (Coelogyne pandurata) whichblossoms between April and December, grow s on shrubs in this 5,000 hectare reserve. Also hundred of other orchid species also grow in this forest. are worth seeing. The people here live from panning for gold, looking for bird's nests and tilling the dry fields.
