The Kumai River is one of the many places in Borneo where you can find the amazing Orangutans that live in on this island. The Kumai River people have had a vicious and fascinating past and have been involved with some of Indonesia's less proud moments although this does not retract from the beauty of both the island and the cultures that exist within it. You can take tours of The Kumai River and these are novel and adventurous ways to experience this are which will not be in any way similar to other areas in the world that you have visited or will ever visit. You will take a traditional boat and travel up The Kumai River from the coast where you will head into the jungle and see the wildlife that is all around the river. You will also be able to visit the camps and orangutan projects that area going up the river. The whole culture of the people is based around the river as this is the easiest and fasted way to negotiate the landscape; incidentally it is also a very enjoyable and tranquil way to see the area.

You will be able to go off the boat to go trekking around the area and visit the orangutans in the parks where they are being monitored and treated before they are released back into the wild. You will also see all of the other animals and wildlife in the area as well as the fireflies in the evenings. Tanjung Puting is one of the main conservational parks and here there is not only some incredible and increasing work going into the helping or the orangutans, there is also a lot of reforestation that is taking place. Whether you trek through the young jungle or the ancient jungle you will be fascinated by the wildlife and interested by nature's capability to take over in a place like this. You can also visit places such as Pondok Tanggui where you will see some of the bizarre and ancient animals such as the pre wild adolescent orangutans who are being nurtured in preparation for release to the wild to ensure they have the best chance possible and you can see the crocodiles, deer and other animals too.

You can stay at camp Leakey where there some amazing owls and other birds on conservation programs and including many of the endangered species' that are very important. There are also plenty of white sand beaches such as Pantai Sungai Cabang which is one other most beautiful and tourist friendly beaches in the area although there is nothing to stop you finding a beach to call your own for a day. There are many more places to see and things to do the include whitewater rafting and all sorts of historical and museum based facilities as well as beautiful and adventurous activities. If you are interested in the colonial history then there are many places you can find symbols and buildings that tell the stories that the island has embraced.
